Dessert Ideas From Your Wine Cabinet

It’s all in a name

If you’re craving a bit more cake in your life, consider adding one of these to your wine cabinet.

A number of winemakers are embracing the moniker of dessert wine by naming their drops after popular baked treats. Released in 2008, the famous Cupcake Vineyards brand is a branch of Golden State Vintners.

Layer Cake is another popular label, owned by One True Vine – who are also the owners of the Cherry Pie Pinot Noir.

Australia’s own Cake Wines is a business all about grabbing a new generation of wine drinkers. Offering many varieties wrapped in artistic and creative labels, Cake Wines will look great on display in your wine collection.

Sweet tooth

If you’re just after a classic sweet dessert wine, consider cracking open a bottle of fortified wine, like Port or Sherry.

Late harvest wines will also be a delicious, sweet treat as shrivelled grapes concentrate the sugars.

Ice cream wine

This is an option best kept out of the wine cabinet and stored safely in the freezer.

Frozen dessert maker Mercer has released a range of wine ice cream that contains 5 per cent alcohol by volume. Complementing the distinctive wine flavours and aromas with a rich dairy texture, this cold treat will be perfect on a hot summer night.

The ice cream is available in six delicious flavours – Cherry Merlot, Chocolate Cabernet, Peach White Zinfandel, Port, Red Raspberry Chardonnay and Riesling.

Watching those calories?

If you’re watching your calorie intake, you may want to avoid Port wines, as their super high alcohol content is only matched by the amount of sugar also in the glass.
Did you know? Because of the typically lower alcohol content, a glass of Champagne is usually more than 50 calories lighter than other wine varieties.

Another bonus for wine drinkers is the average number of calories in a standard glass of Champagne is typically half that of a pint of beer or larger. In fact, one serving of wine is less than half the amount of calories in just a single scoop of ice cream.

So when you’re next approaching dessert time, forgo the food altogether and enjoy a couple of glasses of Champagne from your wine cellar.
