Salmon with Wine

What better way to accompany a salmon dish than with wine?

Back-in-the-day rules tell us everything we need to know about pairing wines with meats. The ground rule is simply that white wines go with white meats and red wines are meant to be paired with red meats.

However, salmon being the meaty fish that it is, is so versatile, that it doesn’t particularly subscribe to old school rules and can be paired with many wines from white to red to rosé.

When trying to pair wine and salmon dish appropriately it’s important to consider the seasoning flavors used in the cooking process, a level of spice, preparation style (grilled or poached) and of course the final sauce used. Simply the fact that it’s salmon is not enough to match the wine perfectly.

Here are some basics to salmon and wine pairing:

– Red wine is a great match for your fish dish particularly if you’ve grilled or charred your salmon fillet.

– A fresh white or a dry rosé is unexpected good for raw salmon dishes.

– Pinot Grigio, Chenin Blanc or another dry white wine that you may prefer go very well with poached salmon.

– When you serve salmon with something creamy it’s a good idea to pair with white wines like Chardonnay that are considered full-bodied.

– Smoked salmon can go with different types of alcohol including vodka and malt whiskey although it is commonly paired with champagne and great with Dry Riesling especially Young German Kabinett Rieslings.

– Chardonnay again is also a good complimentary drink if you’re having salmon fishcakes or salmon hash. To be honest, you can never go wrong with any salmon dish and chardonnay, it’s the most dependable pairing you can go for.

Salmon with Red Wine

Without a doubt, the best red wine to pair with salmon is Pinot Noir. The fruity taste assists in bringing out the flavors of the dish. Zinfandel, Grenache are the top choices for basic salmon, and grilled salmon.

Salmon with White Wine

White wInes are much more accommodating and are able to compliment a variety of seasonings and sauces that you would have on your salmon. The fuller body of white wine will match the weight of the fish as well as the way it feels in your mouth and can bring out the best in salmon.

Salmon with Rosé

Rosé wine tends to be quite a popular pairing with salmon as they’re able to copy the strengths found in both white and red wines making it a great happy medium as it has the best of both worlds. Champagne rosé is also a match made in Heaven.

Rosé wines are very food-friendly and are good value for money. If you’re unsure what to buy, your options are endless with:

Crios Rosé of Malbec

Muga Rioja

Cremant Rosé

Mirabeau en Provence

Laurent Miquel Père et Fils Cinsault Syrah Rosé

Montes Cherub

Mulderbosch

Spy Valley Pinot Noir Rosé, Marlborough

Mumm Napa Brut Rose

Gama Rouge

Whether you want to go for a dry white, a food-friendly rosé or a nice red wine to pair with your favourite salmon dishes, it’s imperative to remember to always take into account the accompanying sauce, the most prominent seasoning in the dish, cooking methods as these elements are equally or even more important than the type of meat you’re pairing them with. Once you do you’ll be one step closer to becoming a salmon and wine pro!
